Family can be a major source of happiness, love, and support.  However, when a family is in crisis or relationships within the family deteriorate, the entire system can get out of balance, and everyone  may suffer.  One parent may be closely aligned with the children, and the other feels left out. Parental conflict, a financial setback, or depression may generate hurt and sadness all around.

It’s not unusual for families to need help during periods of change, adjustment and struggles with finances, health or career.  You haven’t failed; you just need help.  Including other family members in therapy helps by getting everyone on board with changes and to cultivate respect for others’ views and experiences.

We have experience helping families coping with alcoholism recovery, chronic illness, foster parenting, adoption, and assisting parents making difficult choices about children with learning disabilities or behavioral problems such as school refusal or suspension.  We have also worked with adults and their parents, when there are unresolved issues from the past.  Seeking closure and forgiveness helps family members at all stages of life to free themselves of emotional burdens that get in the way.

The focus of family therapy is on the relationships within the family, with the goal of reducing anxiety in the system and learning positive ways to cope with stress, practicing healthy problem solving skills, and improving communication so that conflicts can be identified and effectively resolved.
